Liposomal Science & Technology for Metabolic Health

ProNordic® has a full capability in liposomal supplements, covering key areas of formulation science. Through advanced liposomal technology and a carefully sourced global network of raw ingredients, we develop formulations and patented technologies that deliver consistency, structure, and purpose across various areas of nutritional support, including metabolic and immune health.

Liposomal Technology

Understanding Liposomal

Liposomal focuses on how ingredients can be structured within very small lipid-based carriers designed for use in oral formulations. These structures are made from phospholipids, similar to those found in cell membranes, and are used to organise how ingredients are carried through the digestive system.

Liposomal delivery is used when it aligns with the formulation's purpose and an ingredient's known bioavailability, supporting the transport of certain nutrients through the digestive process and often leading to significantly higher absorption than other formulations.

At ProNordic®, liposomal technology is applied with a focus on stability, structure, and suitability for oral use, ensuring the system performs as intended in the digestive system.

What Defines a True Liposomal System

Not all products described as 'liposomal' are equivalent in structure or function. A true liposomal system forms a stable, microscopic vesicle with a defined inner core and outer lipid bi-layer.

This allows water-soluble compounds such as Vitamin C to be contained within the inner core, while fat-soluble compounds such as Vitamin D3 can be incorporated into the outer membrane.

Well-designed liposomal systems are developed to remain stable in size and structure across varying digestive conditions, including changes in pH from the stomach through to the intestines.

Stability

Stability Through the Digestive Process

One of the key challenges in oral supplementation is maintaining the structure of active compounds as they move through the digestive system. The stomach presents a low pH environment, while the intestines shift to a higher pH with the presence of bile salts.

Well-developed liposomal systems are designed to remain stable across this range, helping protect encapsulated compounds during digestion, reduce premature breakdown, and maintain structural integrity until absorption stages.

Product Quality

At ProNordic®, liposomal systems are used where they align with the purpose of the formulation. Our products are certified to GMP, HACCP, ISO 22000, Halal, Kosher, and Vegan standards.

Performance

What Influences Liposomal Performance

The effectiveness of a liposomal system is influenced by its design and manufacturing.

Particle Size

Typically in the nanometre range around 150 nm, supporting consistent dispersion, structure stability and reliable performance across different formulation conditions.

Surface charge (zeta potential)

Surface charge contributes to overall stability, helping prevent particle aggregation over time and supporting a well-dispersed, consistent liposomal system.

Encapsulation integrity

Ensures the active compound remains securely contained within the structure to support stability during digestion and maintain formulation consistency throughout use.

FAQs

FAQs

Liposomal technology is a way of structuring active ingredients inside very small lipid-based particles, so small they easily fit inside the human cell, which also helps protect them as they move through the digestive system.

They are used in certain formulations where maintaining the structure and stability of key ingredients is part of the overall design approach. They are also used when an ingredient has a limitation in its conventional ability to be absorbed by humans, either at all, or only up to an upper limit such as Vitamin C.

Significantly, yes. Liposomal systems are designed to provide significantly higher absorption compared to many conventional supplement formats, while also helping protect active ingredients during digestion. How much more an individual ingredient is absorbed can vary depending on its type. Our formulations cater to these factors with data from published scientific studies.

Liposomal systems are used within formulations that pass through the digestive system, which may protect the gut from the ingredient, and may protect the ingredient from the gut. They may be included alongside ingredients commonly used to support gut health and digestive wellbeing.

Liposomal technology is used selectively across the ProNordic® range, depending on the role it plays within each formulation. Some ingredients, such as prebiotics, fibre and certain proteins, are designed to be broken down in the gut to become active, so liposomal systems are not always suitable.
